Love Your Body By: Sunny Yogi

Like most people out there, I used to be the biggest critic of myself. Whenever I looked in the mirror I would complain about the size of my thighs, the pudginess of my belly, the stretch marks covering my butt and my legs, etc (I think you get the point).  I was so negative about my body that that I just completely gave up on trying to take care of it.  I didn’t eat healthy, I barely worked out, and mentally I was just a mess. Luckily, for me that is the past now.

At this point of my life, I can confidently say that I do love my body.  Do I look like a Victoria Secret Model? Nope. However, I’m healthy and I’m happy and I no longer strive for unrealistic beauty standards that I could never get too unless I starved myself.  I wrote this to not only share my story of my journey into loving my body but to give others advice on how they can love their body as well.

Every body is different. Realizing that everyone has a different body type is an important step of getting rid of the negative thoughts in your mind. Some people are able to lose weight super fast, or are just naturally skinny, whereas some people are able to gain weight super fast or are naturally big. Whatever body type you have, embrace it. Don’t try to starve or binge yourself to try to achieve a certain body type that might genetically be impossible for you to get to!

Stop comparing yourself to the people around you. You may know someone such as a friend or a colleague or even someone famous you look up to, that has a “perfect” body.  When you start comparing yourself with that person you completely lose focus of how beautiful and lovely your body really is.  Understand too that that person you’re comparing yourself to might have a completely different body type than you or he or she might be struggling with their own self esteem as well. “Do not underestimate yourself by comparing yourself with others. It’s our differences that make us unique and define just how special we are.”

It’s okay to be skinny it’s okay to be fat.  What really matters is that you’re healthy.  Do you get enough food into your diet? Do you workout? Do you get enough rest?

Change takes time. Don’t get discouraged if you’re trying to lose/gain weight and you don’t see results right away. Things take time! Be happy with your progress and your results, appreciate the responsiveness of your body :)

Don’t be your biggest critic. When you are standing in front of a mirror what’s the first thing that pops up in your head? For me, I often criticized how large my thighs were or how pudgy my belly looked.  Try to turn those negative thoughts into positive thoughts.  Yes, my thighs are large but they are muscly and strong :) Yes, my stomach is pudgy but at least I got to eat things that are delicious and yummy! Having a positive attitude can really change the way you start to look at yourself!

Be happy. Smile. Laugh. Enjoy life.  Your body is yours and by having a body you’re able smile, explore, and just enjoy life.  Appreciate all of your muscles, all of your fat, all of your scars, all of your bones, and all of you.  Next time you’re standing in front of a mirror smile and tell yourself that you love yourself. We often forget the importance of loving, appreciating and taking care of our body.

"People often say that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", and I say that the most liberating thing about beauty is realizing that you are the beholder. This empowers us to find beauty in places where others have not dared to look, including inside ourselves." Salma Hayek
